The NSW Art Gallery
At first, I wasn’t really sure visiting the Art Gallery of New South Wales was for me. However, a friend managed to convince to give it a go. I was fascinated by all of the amazing works displayed there. I was specially drawn to one of the sculptures by artist Kim Ah Sam. Here’s a picture:
As many of you probably already know, Australia was first inhabited by aboriginals, who still are a big chunk of the Australian population. When the British colonised the area they weren’t very respectful to them, which is why now there is a strong movement trying to conserve aboriginal traditions and history. This sculpture is one of the examples, it represents the artist’s journey reconnecting to her roots. It’s woven with emu feathers, wire, bamboo, twine and raffia and shows topographical characteristics of the artist’s country. I find this story very touching, which made me really connect with the piece.
